If you've ever played an FPS where the protagonist talks,(take crysis for instance)it can be very strange and awkward and almost never fails to break immersion, as the character answers in a different way to what you're thinking, therefore valve took this into account for the original half life (as well as the added bonus of not needing a voice actor, they where reasonably small back then remember) Also it's "gordon" sorry for correcting you but..
